How to Fix Bent or Warped Wooden Pieces in DIY Kits

Welcome to the Rolife DIY Help Center!
In this official guide, you’ll learn how to repair bent or warped wooden pieces in your DIY kits.

Wood is a versatile and common material in DIY miniature kits. It gives your project a natural and pleasing view. However, you may feel uncomfortable when you notice a piece is slightly bent or warped.

Why Wood Bends

Here are some contributing factors:

  • Humidity: Wood absorbs and releases moisture. Moisture can affect the material, causing it to expand unevenly. If it’s stored in a humid environment, it can swell; if it’s stored in a very dry environment, it may shrink. Both extremes can cause warping.
  • Temperature: Exposing your wooden puzzle to heaters or direct sunlight can make it expand unevenly.
  • Storage Pressure: Storing your wooden puzzles loosely can make them warp. Pressing them tightly against something can cause them to bend over time.
  • Natural behavior:Wood is a natural, organic material. It has grain and texture. Even with laser-cut pieces, it may react to its environment.

How to Straighten Bent or Warped Wooden Pieces

Here are some straightening methods you can use to get your kit on track.

1. Soak and Press Firmly

Lightly wet the warped part, so that the fibers will slacken up. Place the piece in the space in between two flat surfaces, such as paper towels. Put a heavy, flat object, like books or bricks, on top. Leave it for 24 - 48 hours. This will reset the shape as it dries.

2. Use Steam and Press Firmly

Heat some water in a kettle or pot until it boils. Carefully hold the warped piece over the steam for a few seconds. Quickly press the piece between two flat surfaces and weigh it down. Let it sit to dry for at least 24 hours.

3. Clamp and Glue for Extra Support

Apply wood glue to the bent or warped section. Adjust the piece to the flat surface of the project. Use a mini clamp to clamp it into place under the weight until the glue dries. This method will correct the shape of the warped piece.

4. If It Can’t Be Fixed – Request Replacement Parts

If, despite your efforts, a warped wooden piece cannot be fixed, request replacement. Contact our customer service at Rolife and put in your request: Part Replacement Service.

Preventive Storage Tips

  • Keep your kits in a cool, dry place, safe from windows, heaters, and direct sunlight.
  • Lay your kit horizontally, not upright, to prevent the wooden sheets from sagging.
  • If your house is humid, use a display box or sealed plastic box with silica gel packets to store wooden puzzle parts.
  • Don’t move kits from cold to hot places suddenly. Sudden climate changes can cause wooden pieces to expand unevenly.
  • Handle puzzle parts gently, fragile parts. Ensure that they are pressed in using a craft knife or tweezers to make sure that the positioning is exact, rather than using force.

Final Thoughts

Fixing warped wooden pieces shouldn’t be frustrating. The methods outlined in this blog post will prevent you from ruining your project. In fact, they can be turned into a fun moment. The next time you find a bent piece, don’t give up. Turn that awkward moment into a rewarding experience.
