Why the White Rabbit Is Always Late: A Whimsical Journey into the Fall Into Wonder Book Nook

Jul 31,2025 | Rolife Team

Have you ever wondered why the White Rabbit is always late?

While many of us remember him frantically checking his pocket watch, one of our favorite creators Francesca

discovered a charming historical truth behind this iconic character — all while building our Fall Into Wonder book nook.

Join us as we dive into the story behind the White Rabbit’s perpetual lateness, and how this magical DIY miniature lets you bring his world to life on your bookshelf.

Building the Rabbit Hole: A Creator’s Cozy Moment

In a recent video, a talented creator called Francesca invited us into her calm and creative space to assemble the Fall Into Wonder book nook. Piece by piece, she carefully built the enchanting scene of a rabbit hole — complete with intricate layers, whimsical mushrooms, and warm lights glowing from beneath the forest floor.

But as she built, she began to tell a story:

“Have you ever wondered why the White Rabbit is always late? Get comfortable and let’s build together his rabbit hole while I tell you the story of our little friend with the waistcoat and watch…”

A Real-Life Twist: Oxford’s Clock and the Rabbit’s Time

As it turns out, the White Rabbit's constant lateness may have a real-life explanation.

Lewis Carroll, lived and taught at Christ Church College in Oxford, England — a place with its own quirky relationship to time.

Unlike the rest of the UK, the bell tower at Christ Church runs exactly 5 minutes and 2 seconds behind Greenwich Mean Time. It did so in Carroll’s day, and it still does now!

Why? Before the introduction of railways and the need for synchronized time across the country, every town kept its own local time — often based on the sun’s position. Oxford chose to keep its tradition even after GMT became standard.

So, it’s quite possible that Lewis Carroll’s White Rabbit wasn’t just a whimsical invention — he was late by design.

“It was like this at the time of Lewis Carroll, and it happens to be late also nowadays,” our creator Francesca shares.
